Geocache Description:

Shining a light on one of our favorite area parks, finding this cache will teach you some history of the relationship between New York City and Japan. Be sure to go after some of the many other caches in the area after visiting Sakura Park.

This cache is NOT at the posted coordinates (but it is not far away at all).

Welcome to Sakura Park, a charming spot near Grant’s Tomb, Riverside Church, and International House. “Sakura” means “cherry tree” in Japanese. To find this cache, head to the north end of the park and view the enormous “ishi toro”, the beautiful stone lantern near the southern wall of International House. Read the sign near the lantern to learn more about the stone lantern and the history of friendship between our City and Tokyo. Find out when 2,000 cherry trees were given to New York. The first shipment was lost at sea, but the second attempt was successful. The Japanese cherry trees were planted in Sakura and Riverside Park and are still around today.

While standing and reading the sign by the lantern, take the right path and walk along outside the massive buttressed retaining wall. BYOP. For the cache coordinates, substitute the ** for the two digit year the cherry trees were delivered to New York City (19**). Here is the formula for the cache coordinates: N 40 48.(811-**) W 73 57.(705-(**+4))
