Watch out lots of muggles!
Just off The Terregles Road (parking available here) heading onto the cycle path this is the site of the old Maxwelltown Railway Station the first railway station west of Dumfries (closed in February 1939) The Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway Act of 1856, granted permission for the construction of a railway 19 miles 3 furlongs and 77 yards in length. The one hour journey began on 7th November 1859 with stops at Maxwelltown, Killywhan, Kirgunzeon and Dalbeatie. The Dumfries - Stranraer railway line otherwise know as “ The Paddy Line “ closed on 14th June 1965. The line continued to be used to carry freight into the ICI and to the Fuel Depot until 1994. A proposal in 2000 to fettle up and re-open this section of line to return the oil traffic to rail came to nothing. In 2006 Dumfries and Galloway Council in partnership with various funders including Railway Paths Ltd and Sustrans constructed a 3km pedestrian/cyclepath along the former Maxwelltown Railway Line. A section of this route forms part of National Cycle Route 7.
