The Great Shamokin Path was a major Native American Trail in the State of Pennsylvania that ran from the native village of Shamokin (Sunbury) along the bank of the West Branch Susquehanna River north. The Great Shamokin Path continued North to Canaserage (Muncy). Here the Path turned West to the village of Otstonwakn (Montoursville) and then onto French Margaret's Town (Williamsport). Further west the Path came to the Great Island (East of Lock Haven). The Great Island was an important crossroads with paths leading in many directions. There it left the river and continued further west to Chinklacamoose(Clearfield).  At Clearfield the Great Shamokin Path rejoined the West Branch Susquehanna River and followed it west  to Curwensville. The Path then followed Anderson Creek Gorge a few miles,  left it to go west to what is now Chestnut Grove, and then on to The Big Spring (near Luthersburg). The Big Spring was an important camp site and trail hub. The Great Shamokin Path continued through Troutville and followed tributaries of Mahoning Creek to Ponksad-uteney (Punxsutawney). From Punxsutawney, the trail followed Cowanshannock Creek to Smicksburg, Rural Valley, Kittanning and finally the Allegheny River. The Great Shamokin Path connected the Susquehanna River with the Allegheny River (and the Ohio River downstream of Kittanning). For several decades in the early 18th century, the villages of Shamokin and Kittanning were two  of the most important Native American villages in Pennsylvania.

IN THE EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, WHAT TWO VILLAGES WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT NATIVE AMERICAN VILLAGES IN PENNSYLVANIA ?
