This site has a number of monuments including standing stones, a stone oval, a possible stone circle and a row of stones or alignment. It is believed to have been a major ceremonial site in the Neolithic era when the sea level would have been slightly lower. Today the site is on the edge of a salt marsh and is itself pretty wet, so you might need to have some waterproof footwear to examine the area.
The stone alignment consists of a row of 4 standing stones with a 5th lying on its side and is very interesting because each 21st of December, the winter solstice at 1.50pm, the sun when viewed along the length of the alignment appears to ‘set’ in a natural recess in the eastern flank of Croagh Patrick and disappears from view…
