Scavenger Hunt in Downtown Asheville

Schedule:
1:30 - 1:55 PM: Arrive at coordinates, sign log, and record teams
1:55 - 2 PM: Scavenger Hunt sheets handed out
2 - 3:30 PM: Scavenger Hunt in downtown Asheville
3:30 - 4:15 PM: Meet at coordinates to announce winners and hand out prizes
Last year I held a Scavenger Hunt event based on scavenger hunts I participated in as a child. For that event, I hid items in an area park that participants had to find. This year, I have decided to hold the other kind of scavenger hunt. For this Scavenger Hunt, you will be required to find specific objects in and around town and have your photo taken with them.
Scavenger Hunt attendees will participate in teams. All teams will be required to have a digital camera or a phone that can take photos. At the end of the scavenger hunt, I will review photos of the teams with the most points in order to verify their finds and the winning total scores. Please make sure ahead of time that your camera is working, with fully charged batteries, and has room to hold all the photos you will need.
The scavenger hunt will take place in downtown Asheville. Closer to the date, I will post a map of the area that the scavenger hunt is expected to cover. Knowledge of downtown Asheville will be helpful with some of the list items, but not necessarily with all of them.
We will meet at the posted coordinates at 1:30 pm, sign the log, and identify teams. Scavenger hunt lists will be given out at 1:55 and the hunt will start at 2 pm promptly. Please do not arrive late. We will probably not be at the posted coordinates much later than 2 pm handing out lists and going over the rules.
Rules:
*During the hunt, you may choose your method of transport. Traveling on foot will probably be the easiest method since downtown parking can be tricky and difficult to find. However, you are allowed to drive, walk, jog, hop, or bike. Please use caution, obey all traffic laws, and watch out! Winning is not worth being injured or killed.
*All team members are required to stay together. The team leader will act as the photographer. All team members must be present and visible (aside from the photographer) in all photos to get credit for the find. If any team member is not present in a photo, the team will not receive points for that object.
*Participants under the age of 18 are required to have adult supervision.
Lists:
Lists will be handed out immediately prior to the scavenger hunt. The lists will have a wide variety of objects to find. Objects will have varying point values based on rarity and difficulty. Some objects may be unique to downtown Asheville and there may only be one. Some objects will be generic and will be easier to find. Examples which will not be used in the game are the Vance Monument or a stop sign.
Teams:
Teams can have from 2 to 4 players. I do not think a larger team will have an advantage over a smaller team unless some member is particularly resourceful or has more extensive knowledge of downtown Asheville. All team members must stay together during the hunt.
Time Limit:
The scavenger hunt begins promptly at 2 pm and will end at 3:30 pm. At 3:30, we will meet again at the posted coordinates to determine the winners. Teams must be present promptly at 3:30 pm to turn in their score sheets and have their scores verified. Teams that are late will receive a 10 point penalty for every 1-5 minute interval that they are late. (For example, if you are 1 minute late, there is a 10 point penalty. If you are 6 minutes late, that is a 20 point penalty). Prizes will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place winners. I will also have a few door prizes. Gift certificates have been donated by Landsharkz, GXProxy, and CachingContainers. These online stores have lots of items to choose from such as trackable items, caching containers and supplies, swag, and more.
If you want to participate and want to find a team to join, post here that you are looking for a team. If you don't want to participate in the hunt, but want to show up and chat, feel free to stop by between 1:30 - 2 pm or again at 3:30 - 4:15 pm. Also, keep watch on this page since updates and announcements will be posted before the event date.
