14 Squadrons’ Strikemasters were replaced by 18 Aermacchi MB 339CBs in 1991. The RNZAF was the first operator with the Rolls Royce Viper engine and this carried with it the normal issues for first-of-type aircraft. After the initial problems however the aircraft had an excellent record.
The aircraft was primarily for training but could also be used for strike and air-to-air combat.
One aircraft was lost in RNZAF service but both the pilot and a maintainer on-board ejected safely.
The RNZAF Air Combat Force, comprising 2, 14, and 75 Squadrons, was officially disbanded on 13 December 2001.
