There are several good trails to the top of Elliott Knob. One is the North Mountain Trail off of FR 688 (4 mile hike). I took FT 657 when I placed the cache (3 mile hike if the gate is unlocked for FR 91 at Hwy 42). FT 657 has a series of nice 15-20 foot waterfalls. If you take this route, be sure to follow the markings for the trail (there is a switchback marked with three yellow diamonds approximately one mile up the trail.) Do not underestimate the hike or the elevation gain - bring water and snacks. If you want less elevation gain, take the North Mountain Trail.
Elliott Knob is crowned with a lookout tower that resembles an air traffic control tower. There are also several other communications facilities and a small lake not far below the summit.
The cache is a small flat clear Rubbermaid. The original contents include a toy telescope, two cars, a Thai coin purse, a Thai friendship bracelet, 50 Argentine centavos, three US pennies, a Quicksilver X-Man, and more.
Update by Bookiew October 27, 2002
The cache has been re-packaged into an olive drab 7.62 ammo box. In addition to the items originally included in the cache, I have added a working Pentax 35mm camera, a calculator, and a disposable camera for taking your own pics. In addition we found a black velvet glove nearby and put that in too.
This is a really neat spot.
