sull427: After a DNF posted this afternoon, I rode by this evening and although the top of tree had been broken off a couple of weeks ago, there is now a lot more of the tree branches down. There is also lots of poison ivy in the area, so I wasn't looking for it. The hospital has been being razed the last six months to a year to build apartments, so it is time for this one to go. Thanks to all who have come by and visited.

Geocache Description:

After publishing GC4ZWN9 - New Chatham County Hospital, I decided I needed to also place a cache at the old hospital. The old hospital was used from 1950 to 2008.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Chatham Hospital is located in Siler City, NC. It is the only hospital located in Chatham County.

The hospital first opened in the 1930's and was housed in a big two-story brick house with a large porch. There was a pig pen behind the hospital and the pigs belonged to Chatham Hospital. The pigs were slaughtered and prepared for food. The hospital employed a man to tend to the pigs. This house that had been previously used was converted into apartments when a newer hospital was built in 1950.

This now old hospital building was built in 1949 and occupied in 1950. They added onto this 1950's hospital building in 1968. The emergency room was constructed in 1997. The helipad was constructed around the same time and the Siler City Rotary Club helped fund the helipad. Since 1949, the Rotary Club has given approximately 2 million dollars to the hospital.

To celebrate the hospital's history, staff held a retirement party for the old building July 18. 2008. This building is now unoccupied.

The newest hospital building was opened July 28, 2008 and is located at 475 Progress Blvd.
