GRANITE MOUNTAIN
When the Spanish first visited the Central Arizona area in the 1500s and 1600s, they recorded Yavapai Indians inhabiting areas south of Williamson Valley, while the Hualapai (Walapai or Pai) roamed the Juniper Mountain area. Buffer zones of uninhabited land separated the peoples. The Granite Mountain Yavapai band, called Wiih govdteh bahyah or “people of Granite Mountain area,” hunted around Prescott, the grasslands of Chino Valley, the southern Williamson Valley, the Sierra Prieta, and the northern Bradshaw Mountains. Ya va ki shi. According to tribe elder Ted Vaughn, the Yavapai-Prescott Indians called it wiih guhv dehm, meaning “rock that is big.” Granite Mountain was originally called Mount Gurley for John Addison Gurley, the first appointed governor of the Arizona Territory, who died before taking office.
