“The Sound of Oslo Airport, Fornebu” is a temporary sound installation composed by Christian Eggen. The sound installation is placed on what used to be the airport area and serves as a historical link to the new suburb that is emerging at Fornebu. Through collaborating with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the composer gained access to the radio archive and more than 600 radio segments from historical events at Fornebu Airport between 1936 and 1998.
The sound installation is supposed to be a source of joy and surprise for visitors and offers the voices of Knut Hamsun, Jonas Lie, Mother Theresa, Charlie Chaplin and the Pope, as well as stereo-recordings of the last planes that landed and took-off at Fornebu in 1998. Other sound images recreate the buzzing atmosphere at the airport and gives the listener associations to the big world beyond and a sense of travel. And how does it really sound, up in the skies?

Lydinstallasjonen finnes på området som tidligere rommet Fornebu flyplass, og gir en historisk forankring til den nye bydelen som vokser fram på Fornebu. I samarbeid med NRK fikk komponisten tilgang til radioarkivet og mer enn 600 radioklipp med historiske hendelser fra Fornebu flyplass fra 1936 – 1998.
Lydinstallasjonen skal være til glede og overraskelse for besøkende, og byr på Knut Hamsun, Jonas Lie, Mor Theresa, Charlie Chaplin og Paven samt stereo-opptak av de siste flyene som landet og tok av fra Fornebu i 1998. Andre lydbilder gjenskaper den sitrende stemningen på flyplassen, og gir assosiasjoner til den store verden der ute, og følelsen av å reise. Og hvordan høres det egentlig ut, oppe i luften?
