The Docks opened in 1796 and are entered by the Camden, Westmoreland and Buckingham locks. The cache is placed on the walkway by the Dodder, on the Ringsend side of the Camden lock. The locks, canal, and nearby Dodder and Liffey are largely unprotected, and much care is required, especially because of the obvious danger to young children.
A short walk in the direction of the Grand Canal Dock will take you near U2's recording headquarters on Hanover Quay, easily recognisable from the grafitti placed by adoring fans, and a host of award-winning buildings. You will quickly see why the area is known as 'Silicon Dock', with most of the major modern-media giants of the world and including Google, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, quartered here.
The following account of the opening ceremony of the docks is from "Walker's Hibernian Magazine:" "This being St. George's Day, was exhibited one of the grandest and most interesting spectacles ever witnessed by this kingdom—the opening of this Grand Canal Floating and Graving Dock. At 11 o'clock his Excellency the Lord Lieutenant, attended by his mite, and accompanied by Mr. Secretary Pelham, went on board the yacht (commanded by Sir Alexander Schomberg) lying in the river. The yacht immediately proceeded into the great eastern ship lock, from whence she passed into the floating docks. As soon as the yacht entered the basin a royal salute was fired from the park of artillery on the south bank of the docks, which was returned by the yacht as soon as she came to anchor, when she also hoisted the royal standard."
A short walk from GZ towards Ringsend will afford you fine views of Shelbourne Park greyhound-racing stadium and the Aviva (Landsdown Road) stadium which is home to Ireland's Rugby and Soccer teams.
The cache is among the stones.
