The segments don't actually move on their own, but because their barbed spines latch on to passing animals (including people) with a hold stronger than that of the parent plant, the merest touch can cause a painful connection.
Be very careful, because this vicious vegetation harbors the cunningly camoflaged cache you are searching for. Gloves, tweezers, and a grabbing tool are recommended.
