LOUTH COUNTY Council's ambitious plans for a cyclepath linking Carlingford and Omeath are on the right track following the announcement of €687,000 funding for the project. The money will be used to develop a 6.2km Greenway along an old railway line between Griers Quay, Omeath and Carlingford. ' There is future potential for this cycleway to form part of a 32km route from Dundalk to Carlingford and on to Newry,' said Deputy Fergus O'Dowd, Minister for State NewEra, adding that he is actively pressing for a united cycleway throughout Louth to replicate the success of the Great Western Greenway in Mayo. ' This would help to unlock the transport and tourism potential in the county that cycling has to offer.' The cyclepath will run along the route of the old railway line between Carlingford and Griers Quay providing cyclists and walkers with a safe track offering spectacular views along the scenic coast of Carlingford Lough. The news has been widely welcomed as a tremendous boost to tourism in the area. 'It's going to open up one of the most scenic parts of the Cooley penninsula to everybody,' says Kevin Woods, who as chairnan of the Louth Economic Forum was one of those who advocated the proposal from an early stage. He explained that the local authority agreed to facilitate the provision of the cycle path along the route of the old railwayline in tandem with the installation of a new watermain to Omeath
