On June 7th, 1917, at 4:10 in the morning, Zero Hour, the British let explode 20 mines from Hill 60 to The Birdcage, east of Ploegsteert. 19 mines exploded, one was defused before the attack by the Germans. Nearly 500,000 pounds of explosives shaked the ground like an earthquake. The inhabitants of Paris and London could feel and hear the explosion.
Your mission
Imagine You're sitting here, june 17th 1917. Look in the direction of the Spanbroekmolen, or what was left, but still there ( at 52° ). Three hundred meters from You, the British soldiers ready to attack, up hill ! The Germans up there on the hill, defending the mill. And then it happens at 4:10 AM, a big blast. Hell is on earth ! Just go there and think about what happened here in this peacefull scenery.

Op 7 juni 1917, om 4:10 in de ochtend, Zero Hour, lieten de Britten 20 mijnen exploderen, vanaf Hill 60 tot The Birdcage ten oosten van Ploegsteert. Er explodeerden 19 mijnen, één werd voor de aanval door de Duitsers onschadelijk gemaakt. Bijna 500.000 kilo springstof liet de grond beven zoals bij een aardbeving. De inwoners van Parijs en Londen konden de explosie voelen en horen.
Uw missie
Stel dat je hier zat op 17 juni 1917. Kijk in de richting van de Spanbroekmolen, of wat er nog van overschoot toendertijd ( op 52 °). Driehonderd meter van U, zitten de Britse soldaten klaar om aan te vallen, de heuvel op ! De Duitsers verdedigen daar op de heuvel de molen. En dan gebeurt het om 04:10, een grote ontploffing. De hel is op aarde ! Ga naar dit punt en denk na over wat er gebeurde hier in dit nu o zo rustige landschap .
