History
On December 28, 1915 the '171st Tunnelling Company’ begins to dig a deep shaft in the front line halfway between the forest of Ploegsteert and Messines, near the hamlet of St Yvon. On February 1, 1916, they extended the shaft with a gallery. Without German resistance and in solid clay the excavation goes quickly. However, when a distance of over 200 m is reached, they are suddenly in a soft layer of sand. After five minutes the quicksand filled the gallery over a length of 10m. They have to dig a new angled gallery. Late March, a branch to the left led to a first chamber. The main gallery continues with a right turn and ends 180m further in a second room. Mid May 1916, the mines are ready.

Halweg tussen het bos van Ploegsteert en Mesen, nabij het gehucht St. Yvon, begint de ‘171st Tunnelling Company’ op 28 december 1915 een diepe schacht in de frontlinie uit te graven. Op 1 februari 1916 startten ze vanuit deze schacht met een galerij. Zonder Duitse tegenstand en met een vaste ondergrond gaan de werken snel vooruit. Echter, wanneer een afstand van ruim 200m bereikt wordt, komen ze plots in een zachte zandlaag terecht. Na een vijftal minuten is de gang over een lengte van 10m volgestroomd. Een nieuwe schuine galerij wordt gegraven. Eind maart wordt een aftakking gemaakt naar links naar een eerste kamer. De hoofdgalerij maakt een rechtse bocht en eindigt 180m verder in een tweede kamer. Half mei 1916 zijn de mijnen klaar.

Le 28 Décembre 1915, a mi-chemin entre la forêt de Ploegsteert et Messines, près du hameau de St-Yvon, la '171st Tunnelling Company’ commence à creuser une cheminée profonde dans la ligne de front. Le 1er Février 1916, une galerie prolonge la cheminée. Sans résistance allemande et le sous-sol d’argile solide font avancé les travaux rapidement. Cependant, quand une distance de plus de 200 m est atteinte, ils sont tout à coup dans une couche de sable molle. Après cinq minutes, l'inondation du couloir par le sable sur une longueur de 10m. Une nouvelle galerie inclinée doit être creusée. Fin Mars, une esquive vers la gauche mène vers une première chambre. La galerie principale continu légèrement vers la droite et termine 180m plus loin dans une deuxième salle. Mi-mai 1916, les mines sont prêts.
