The project that you see to the North of the geocache is the McGinness Hills Geothermal Complex owned by Ormat Technologies. The 30-megawatt (net capacity) power plant has been in full operation since June 15, 2012, selling the renewable electricity to NV Energy under a 20-year power purchase agreement at approximately half of the full energy price. Full energy prices are expected to be paid upon NV Energy’s approval of the Commercial Operation Date (COD). The facility will generate enough electricity to power approximately 20,000 homes. During the project it will create 150 construction jobs and up to 12 permanent operation jobs and will have a significant financial impact for the next 30 years in Lander County. The geothermal unit is comprised of approximately 7,680 acres of public land managed by BLM and leased private land.
Additionally, the second phase of construction has begun and will provide for an additional 30mw of electricity. Long lonely road is provides for the difficulty & terrain rating. No need to continue on down the road as it just keeps going and ends at a private ranch.
