Geocache Description:

This year on May 11 marks the 150 anniversary of the Battle at Yellow Tavern. I grew up in this area my whole life and never knew about it until this  past few months. I hope you enjoy this series and you learn a little history along the way.

This is cache is placed right near where the Yellow Tavern was at. Right at the corner of Telegraph and Brook.

The Yellow Tavern

Yellow Tavern no longer exists, but at the time of the battle it stood somewhere right at the corner of telegraph and brook. Soldiers described it as a dilapidated and abandoned structure. Telegraph Road was the principle thoroughfare running north from Richmond. After the war, Rt. 1 replaced Telegraph Road as the preferred highway north.

The Battle of Yellow Tavern

The Battle of Yellow Tavern was fought on May 11, 1864, as part of the Overland Campaign of the American Civil War. Union cavalry under Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan was detached from the Army of the Potomac to conduct a raid on Richmond, Virginia, and challenge legendary Confederate cavalry commander Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart. The Confederate force was outnumbered and outgunned and Stuart was mortally wounded while attempting to rally his men, dying the next day.
