Geocache Description:

The first in my series on churches and graveyards of Mossel Bay.

PLEASE REPLACE CACHE EXACTLY AS YOU FOUND IT.

ST PETER'S ANGLICAN CHURCH

This historical church has great significance for me.  On one of my many visits to visit my aged folks, I discovered that my dads grandfather was the lighthouse keeper 1st class of St Blaize.

On researching further it was discovered that he was an active member of this church. I have looked for his grave in the local graveyard but to no avail.

I have since made contact with a local historian to confirm some details of this magnificent building.

What I do know is that at the time of its conception Mossel Bay was named Aliwal South and was a small village by the sea.
Bishop Grey saw the possibility of founding another parish here in conjunction with George & Knysna.

Thomas and Mary Sarah Sheard were sent to Mossel Bay in 1855 after he had been ordained as Deacon in December 1854 in Cape Town.
They started a little chapel school in the building is today the St Peter's Parish Hall. It is sad to say that neither of them lived to see the building of this church.

The cornerstone was laid in 1876 and the church was completed in 1879.
The steeple and sanctuary were added in 1906.

The cache is placed in memory of my great grandfather.
If you are lucky the church will be open and you can admire the beautiful pipe organ and brass lectern in the form of an eagle.

The stained glass windows still need to be researched and as soon as I have more info i will edit this description.
