This cache is meant to be a sort of ode to my love of nature, especially the woods. Growing up in Ohio, I loved to go through forests with oak, elm, maple, spruce, and more. Now that I'm in Florida, the nature is different, but still beautiful.
This cache is placed on FIU's Nature Preserve. Three distinct ecosystems provide habitat for the 13 endangered plants, 17 threatened plants, and the other 452 plants and animals that call this place home. There is also an organic fruit and vegetable garden which attracts many people, and pollinators, to this part of campus. Great historic geologic formations still exist here today and are on display for all to see. Their fascinating designs bring visitors back to an ancient Miami that has long been lost due to development.
The cache is a medium sized ammo can. (The original cache was an awesome hollowed out stump, but I neglected to recognize that organic matter decays. Ooops, my mistake.) Please note that NO BUSHWACKING is required; please don't destroy the beautiful plant life that the Preserve is, well, preserving! Cache is near the side of the trail. Trail is somewhat rocky, but would be a great cache to enjoy with slightly older kids. The preserve is open 24/7, but parking may be tricky during school days. (See parking waypoints.) Entry to the preserve is free, but you may need to pay for parking. FTF has a chance to collect a wooden prize (sticking with the theme) and a travel bug that has a long journey ahead of it.
I cache with my cell phone, so if you are able to give more accurate coordinates, by all means, inform me! I did my best to average multiple tests of the coordinates.
This is my first cache and I look forward to seeing who can grab FTF and what people think of the hide. (We need more ammo box caches 'round here!) I hope you are able to learn more about Florida's natural ecosystem and enjoy the outdoors a bit! Cache on!
***Congrats to dannyp93 on his lightning fast FTF!***
