Penitentiary Glenn has 6 trails with many things to see and do. Visit injured animals and help them recover, or ride the rails! 424 acres of forest, fields, wetlands, and over 7.5 miles of hiking trails. This cache will take you to all but one of those trails. This cache has been placed with the permission of Lake county parks.
This cache was designed to take you through one of the best metro parks in the area and honor those who have served our country. There are 6 stages in total that will cover just over 10,000 steps along the way and learn more about the five branches of the service.
Each of the 1st 5 stages is themed around one branch of our military. There is a metal tag on the outside of stage 1 that contains the coordinates for stage 2. On the inside is a clue that will provide part of the coordinates needed to reach stage 6 (the final). This will be the same for all of the 1st 5 stages.
I strongly recommend picking up a trail map before heading out on this cache hunt. You can download one from Lake Metro Parks web site. It could save you a few wrong turns along the way. Head out past the train station to the Gorge Rim loop trail to start. Depending on your speed it will take 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours to travel the trails the stages will take you on. Take a snack and enjoy hiking and taking in what the park has to offer.
There is a picnic table on the trail between stage 2 and 3 that makes a great little stop for that snack. The trip from stage 2 to stage 3 will require a small water crossing and can be pretty muddy after the rain.
Stages 1 to 5 are a plastic lock’n’lock container 4 X 6 X 2 and the final is an ammo can. The Final is full of items based on our branches of service for trade and it would be great if we can maintain the theme as time goes on.
It can be a bit muddy after the rain and there is a small water crossing between stages 2 and 3.

Stage 3 The United States Army, our ground support team. What does it mean to be part of the Army? Read inside and learn the Soldier’s Creed. On the inside lid you will find what C (I know, I know you got the idea at this point)
Stage 4 The United States Air Force, protection from above and in cyber space. Read inside to learn about the time line of the Air Force. How did the Air Force come to be? On the inside lid you will find what D= (The meaning of the word monotonous…..)
Stage 5 The United States Coast Guard, protecting our coast lines. Somewhat misunderstood, what is the real mission of the Coast Guard? And for those wondering, yes they are involved in our country’s combat missions. And for the last time, ( I promise) on the inside lid you will find what E=.
Cache hidden with permission from the Lake Metroparks volunteer geocacher and a permit has been granted. No caching from 11PM till 6 AM. Please follow all the posted park rules and regulations.
