By 1814, the existing Cardiff Gaol that was located in St Mary street was deemed insufficient for coping with the both the scale of demand and quality of building to cope with the quickly expanding industrial town, and so proposals were made to build a new county jail for Glamorgan. Construction commenced in 1827, and the new stone building located south of Crockherbtown opened at the end of 1832.
It is commonly believed that Cardiff prison is built on the site of ‘The Spital’, a 14th century leper colony run by the nuns of St Mary Magdalene but unfortunately Sister Magdalene was unavailable for comments on this matter.
Congratulations to Lonewolfcrew for FTF.
The hint has changed as it was far to easy.
