The path to the cache follows the Shut-In trail. Park at the Beaver
Dam Gap parking area on BRP.
Note: The original physical cache (an ammo box) is no longer at
this site. The cache will be replaced in the near future. The hike
is a beautiful one, any time of year. We urge anyone interested in
a fun, brisk walk to check out this site. The original cache was a
metal .30 calibre ammo box. The contents as placed comprised the
following: a deck of cards, a sapphire, a quartz crystal, an Easter
egg ink pen, two mechanical pencils, a pack of moleskin, an
American flag cross-stitched pin (taken from the Mt. Pisgah cache),
and the log book. The path follows part of the shut-in trail,
except for the last 50 yards. In late April, wild irises,
mayapples, and a variety of other wild flowers and flowering trees
line the trail. At the top of Ferrin Knob the remains of an old
watchtower are visible. You can park at either of two locations to
begin the hike to this cache. The location with the most elevation
rise is off the Blue Ridge Parkway where FSR 479 leads to Bent
Creek Experimental Forest. The second location is at the Beaver Dam
Gap overlook area on the BRP. From there you will have a 500 ft
elevation change - a very pleasant hike.
