The Josephites had a school at Tailem Bend from 1941 until the end of 1982 when a lay principal took charge there . This building was formerly a Railway Hostel.  It was purchased by the Catholic Church in 1954 and converted to a school building and was opened for the purpose of educating children in the faith in 1956.  Further additions included the shelter shed and the tuck shop, the back room of which was used for sewing classes.  In the 1970s the school qualified for a federal government grant and further improvements were made, including a toilet block, student and library furniture and carpets.  In 1982 the school became fully staffed by lay people. Eventually the school was forced to close and since 1994, a sister has been living in Tailem Bend and working as a Parish Pastoral Associate in the Murray Mallee and Murray Bridge parishes.

The corregated iron building opposite on Trevena Road is the former Girl Guide Hall.

This historic building is believed to have been built in the early 1920’s.  It was originally located behind the Tailem Bend Institute (now the Town Hall).

The building was the business premises of Mr W E Jennings, carpenter and part time undertaker.  Tailem Bend Guides purchased the building from Mr Jennings’ estate in 1936 for the princely sum of £65.  (65 pounds)

In June 1936, Guides and Scouts from around the district took part in a celebration to officially open the Guide Hall.  A procession walked from the Guides’ former meeting place at the home of Mr and Mrs Lewsey, on Princes Hwy, to the new hall.  At the head of the procession, in her car, was Mrs K D Bowman, Guide Commissioner, pulled along by the Scouts.  After the opening ceremony, a fete was held, followed by a campfire at the Scout Hall.

Guides ceased during the Second World War and the building was rented by the CWA.  Guides resumed in the 1950’s.  In 1955, Mrs Trafford Cowan offered the Guides a block of land on Seymour Tce (now Trevena Rd), so that the hall could be moved from the Institute property.  The official opening of the hall at its “new home” was held on 29 March 1957.

In 1962 the kitchen extension and toilet block were built.  New entrance doors and the veranda were added in 1966.  This made way for a further extension, to be used as a store room for camping equipment, which was built in 1968. The building was sold by the Girl Guides in 2007 and is now a private residence.
