Fantastic views, an arboretum and previously home to Led Zeppelin front-man, Robert Plant. A public footpath leads you through the grounds.
The Argoed (pronounced Are-goy-d) was originally built in the 16th century, but what you see now was rebuilt in the 1860s. The house was greatly extended in 1865 when bought by Richard Potter (chairman of GWR). His daughter Beatrix Webb founded the LSE and coined the term "collective bargaining" amongst other things. George Bernard Shaw is rumoured to have written his plays The Man of Destiny and Mrs Warren's Profession whilst staying at the house as a guest.
In the 1980s rock singer Robert Plant bought the estate and lived here for a few years. He made his name with Led Zeppelin and songs such as Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven.
We like to walk up from Redbrook (hence the "stairway"), but you can park in Penallt and enjoy a short, flat stroll with some wonderful views and a beautiful avenue of old Yew trees. The Inn at Penallt (closed Mondays) is an added bonus on a summer's day too and is very dog friendly. Much of their produce is from Kate Humble's nearby farm.
To complete this Geocache you must start at the listed coordinates and head towards Penallt along the public footpath collecting the answers to a few simple questions.
A=number of vertical bars on the kissing gate. The bars have fleur de lys like shapes on them. Now start heading back past the first house.
B=the number of mounted stone planters by the driveway
C=the number of bells on the roof
D=the number of large stone balls in a line by the second kissing gate (there are several others around that should not be counted)
E=The number of sides on the shaft of the religious looking stone artefact mounted on the wall as you leave the last property and join the driveway.
Just to check you have the right answers A+B+C+D+E=17
