Majestosa, a Usina do Gasômetro ergue-se junto às margens do Guaíba. Centro cultural e ponto turístico, a velha Usina surgiu em 1928, pertencendo à Cia Energia Elétrica Riograndense, subsidiária da multinacional americana Eletric Bond & Share. A nova Usina trouxe problemas: as suas chaminés despejavam a fuligem do carvão sobre as casas, nascendo aí a necessidade de uma nova chaminé, mais alta, que foi erguida em 1937, tendo ficado com 117 metros. Quem imaginaria a cidade hoje sem a famosa chaminé da Usina, um dos referenciais paisagísticos da cidade?
O complexo arquitetónico da Usina recebeu esse nome devido à proximidade com a antiga usina de gás de hidrogénio, na rua Washington Luiz, que fornecia gás para iluminação pública e abastecimento de fogões. A Usina tem uma estrutura em betão armado.
 Durante décadas, a Usina cumpriu o seu papel de abastecer Porto Alegre, até que, com a crise petrolífera de 1974 e a falta de condições para atender a crescente demanda de energia, foi fechada. Tal como o Mercado Público, as autoridades da época pensaram em demolir o prédio. A sociedade civil, especialmente a comunidade cultural, se mobilizou e reagiu contra um possível atentado à memória cultural da cidade. Até que, em 1982, a Eletrobrás transferiu o uso do terreno para o município. Neste mesmo ano, o governo estadual fez o tombamento da chaminé e, no ano seguinte, o governo municipal fez o mesmo com o prédio da Usina. A Usina estava salva.
É um dos pontos mais tradicionais para ver o famoso pôr-do-sol da cidade, nas margens do Lago Guaíba. Desde 1989, os 18 mil metros quadrados de área abrigam três auditórios, cinco salas multiusos, anfiteatros para vídeo e atividades múltiplas, laboratório fotográfico, estúdio de gravação, videoteca, espaços para exposições, centro de documentação com biblioteca, cinema, o Teatro Elis Regina e praça de variedades com restaurante e bares. Tem recebido grandes eventos, como a Feira Latino Americana de Artesanato, o Salão Internacional da Imprensa, a Bienal, entre outros.

Majestic, the Usina stands along the banks of the Guaiba. The new plant brought problems: its chimneys poured charcoal soot on the houses, and there born the need for a new and higher chimney, which was erected in 1937, with 117 meters. Who would know the city today without the famous Usina do Gasômetro, one of the city's scenic references?
The architectural complex of the plant received its name due to its proximity to the old hydrogen gas central in the Washington Luiz street, who supplied gas for public lighting and stoves. The plant has a structure with reinforced concrete.
For decades, the plant has fulfilled its role of supplying Porto Alegre, until, with the oil crisis of 1974 and the lack of conditions to meet the growing energy demand, was closed. Like the Public Market, the authorities of the time thought of demolishing the building. Civil society however, especially the cultural community, mobilized and reacted against a possible attack on the cultural memory of the city. Until, in 1982, Eletrobras transferred the land to the city. In that same year, the state government made the chimney a culture heritage and the following year, the city government did the same with the building. The plant was saved.
It is one of the most traditional spots to see the famous city's sunset on the banks of the Guaiba Lake. Since 1989, the 18 thousand square meters building houses three auditoriums, five multipurpose rooms, lecture halls and multiple activities for video, photo lab, recording studio, video library, exhibition spaces, documentation center with a library, cinema, Elis Regina Theatre and a varieties square with restaurant and bars. Has received major events, such as the Latin American Crafts Fair, the International Exhibition of Printing, the Biennial, among others.
