Geocache Description:

St Martins, Owston Ferry

The published coordinates will take you to a pull in at the side of the road where you can access the church. The roads are quite narrow so please take care when parking.

It is likely that a settlement has existed at Owston Ferry since Roman times. A number of Roman artefacts have been found within half a mile of the church, including a hoard of Roman Imperial coins.

The south aisle is the oldest part of the present church with 15th century windows added. The north aisle windows are the same period but re-used when the aisle was rebuilt in 1844 using yellow ‘London’ brick.

The tower dates from the 14th century. During Victorian restoration work the medieval altar stone, known as a ‘mensa’, was discovered and erected in the south aisle. The stone bears the five crosses which would be anointed by the priest during Mass.    In the 1790s the nave and aisle roofs were renewed, during the course of which the clerestory above the nave, probably of 15th century origin, was removed.

From 1820 to 1862 the Rev. William Stonehouse MA was vicar of the church. Together with his wife, Elizabeth, and his sister-in-law Francis Sandars he made many additions to the church and village.

The vestry dates from 1823 and in 1835 an organ was placed in a loft in the tower. In 1840 the church porch was replaced, probably of similar design to the original. The Gothic triple archway at the entrance to the church grounds was erected in 1859.
