Geocache Description:

ECWQ (Emmet County Water Quest)

The Emmet County Water Quest Geo-trail will take participants to both famous and obscure places in Emmet County to learn about locations and people that made the county famous.

This cache is part of the Emmet County Water Quest Geo-Trail. When discovering the “wet” historic places in Emmet County each cache will provide a specific answer to a question on the passport. Information and the passport can be downloaded from the Emmet County web site

http://www.emmetcounty.org/geocache/

Once 25 of the caches in this tour have been completed, the passport can be taken to Emmet County Building, Suite 178 or mailed to Beth Eckerle, Emmet County Building, Suite 178, 200 Division St., Petoskey, MI 49770 to receive a collectable souvenir coin for this series.

The original Oden State Fish Hatchery was established in 1921 and continued to operate until 2002. The new Oden State Fish Hatchery complex was completed in 2002 and is one of the most advanced fish culture facilities of its kind, rearing brown and rainbow trout. The facility has production buildings for rearing and brood stock, outdoor rearing facilities and a state of the art effluent treatment system.

A trout stream was constructed in the old raceway complex and demonstrates how a degraded stream can be repaired. A stream section viewing chamber is located adjacent to the stream and allows the public to see what happens underwater in a stream. The water for the hatchery and ultimately for the stream comes from five deep wells. The average water use is approximately three million gallons per day. The water temperature of well water is a constant 47 degrees Fahrenheit.
