This cache has been archived.

Seawind: Conditions have changed extensively with the nature signs and their subjects. I'm archiving this one, but watch for a replacement, "Ecola Distancia".

Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE LISTED COORDINATES!

Take a hike on the extremely beautiful Clatsop Loop Trail and solve a puzzle based on photographs to find this cache!

The posted coordinates will get you to the parking area and also the trailhead for the hike.  Your goal then will be taking the 2.5 mile hike and watching for the 14 nature trail markers placed along the way.  At each marker, look around and identify which of the 14 photos below was taken there.  Write the number of the marker (1-14) in the blank next to the matching photo.

After completing the hike, you should have numbers assigned to all 14 photos.  When you have found the last one, build the coordinates of the cache as follows:

Add the four-digit numbers next to the photos for signs 1 through 7 to get XX.XXX

Add the four-digit numbers next to the photos for signs 8 through 14 to get YY.YYY

The cache is at:

N  45 XX.XXX

W 123 YY.YYY

Those are the basics, but please read on for IMPORTANT notes:

  • There is usually a supply of brochures on the signboard at the posted coordinates.  Be sure to pick one up as it contains interesting information on the nature trail as well as a map showing the locations of the 14 markers.

  • The markers are a mix of sign panels and wooden post markers.  Each one contains a number (1-14) to identify the site.  On the sign panels, the number is in the lower right corner.

  • Sign panel number one is at the posted coordinates.  This is where you will identify the photo taken there.

  • Sign panel number eight is missing, but the posts and board are still in place and it is numbered if you look closely.

  • Shortly after beginning the hike, you will come to sign number two, a rock wall and a bridge.  This is where the loop begins and ends.  You can hike in either direction.  By hiking clockwise, you will be passing the signs in reverse order (14 to 1) or in a counter-clockwise direction the signs will be in order (1 to 14).

  • At each marker, look around in all directions and watch for something that matches one of the photos.  The photo sites are visible at or near the markers, but may require walking around up to 40 feet to spot.

  • Don't forget to print the cache listing and take it with you for identifying the photos!  If your printer is similar to mine, you will need to print pages 1-9.

  • Dogs are welcome on the trail, but must be kept leashed.  There are steep and dangerous dropoffs along the way.

  • The loop is part of the Oregon Coast Trail.

  • If you need some help, send me an email and I will be glad to assist.

  • Be sure to stop for the other caches along the way, such as this series.
