Geocache Description:

Sexton Mountain was first used as a fire lookout in 1914 with a tent. In 1920 a cupola cabin was constructed and is still on the summit. Then in 1932 a house with a tall cupola atop one corner was built. This remained as the lookout tower until it was replaced by a 30' timber tower with ODF cab in 1963. Sadly, this structure was burned by vandals in early April 2006.

Sexton Mountain is only at an elevation of 3,834’ but it is well-situated looking into Grants Pass, Wolf Creek and Graves Creek. Because of the need for this fire lookout, it was replaced with an all-steel live-in tower in 2008 and continues to be staffed in the summer.

The lookout is now well protected behind a locked gate. It is a fairly strenuous .78 mile hike to the cache site near the lookout tower. The day we placed the cache it was drizzly and cloudy so the views were not the best. The tower was not manned so the lookout person does not know about the cache.

There are two ways to the lookout but we used the route from Placer Rd to Beecher Road. It is about 5 miles from Placer Rd to the locked gate. It is a good graveled road that most all vehicles can handle. The other route off Old Hwy 99 goes through private property. You would need to talk with the property owner upon arrival to gain access.

You are looking for a standard lookout cache container with a log book and swag.
