Roger Bannister first broke the four-minute mile barrier on May 6th, 1954 with a time of 3:59.4. Only six weeks later, on June 21st, John Landy set a new record time of 3:57.9.
This set the stage for the race of the century - "The Miracle Mile". These two runners were set to compete in the British Empire Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, BC. Although the actual race was held at Empire Stadium, Balaclava Park running track was built as a training facility for these games. To avoid the frenzy of reporters and spectators, Roger Bannister would often sneak away to the Balaclava track to train during the days leading up to this historic race.
