Geocache Description:

Each of the geocaches in the PGF Leaf series will highlight an animal that can be found in the Starkey Wilderness Preserve. While searching for the PGF Leaf caches, and while hiking in any wilderness area, please remember ... this is the animal's home - you are merely a guest. Be respectful of natural communities, and leave nothing behind but footprints.

Cachers are invited to upload pictures they take of each animal subject - as long as the picture was actually taken within the boundaries of the Starkey Wilderness Park.

Crow

The crow is one of the most common animals you will see in J.B. Starkey Wilderness Park. They are large black birds who are at home in remote habitats, as well as densely populated picnic areas. Crows are commonly seen scavenging around trash cans, but have no problem feeding on nuts, seeds, insects, or even other birds.

Most people are able to identify the call of a crow as the familiar "caw, caw" sound. But crows are capable of making a variety of sounds, depending on the season and locale. Some are even adept at mimicking the calls of other birds. Crows are thought to be one of the most intelligent bird species. Scientific studies have shown that crows are capable of recognizing individual humans, and commonly use tools like sticks or twigs to reach food.

Crows are a long-lived bird species, reaching sexual maturity at around 3 years. They have an average lifespan of up to 20 years, although crows held in captivity have been known to live up to 30 years. Although no crow species in Starkey Park are considered endangered, all crows are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
