Geocache Description:

To the south of here lies what little remains of the Suntana Raceway, aka Turpin Speedway, and in its waning years the Thunder Mountain Raceway. It had races from 1965-1999. The last several years it struggled quite a bit, changing hands several times, and was finally shuttered forever in 1999, in large part thanks to the newer Rocky Mountain Raceway up in West Valley City.

For a long time, the track was the only NASCAR sanctioned racing in Utah, and in its glory days drew quite a sizeable crowd. For example, see the newspaper clipping below:

Many came from all over the state to participate and watch races here, but time was not kind to the raceway, and the razing of Bonneville Raceway (replaced by Rocky Mountain Raceway) was the last nail in the coffin. Many that used to come from SLC now stayed there, and soon the raceway was a thing of the past.

Little remains of it now, but the iconic rocket that used to be here is now on Main Street (see the waypoint), and you can also spy the sign at the gate. Otherwise, not much remains.

To see the story on how the rocket got to where it is now, one of the last remaining icons from here, see:From Car Man to Rocket Man
