We immigrated from Germany in the 60's, with Dad working for Chrysler in Detroit. Over the years English became the prominent language in our household, especially once my siblings were born, but certain phrases and expressions remained. "Tomaten auf den Augen" is one. This expression would sarcastically (but lovingly) come your way when you were standing right in front of something you were looking for but somehow couldn't see. The literal translation is "Tomatoes on your eyes", which makes no sense (or about as much sense as "the bees knees"), but such is the tendency with colloquialisms. Mom had a love for the outdoors that included camping, hiking, and gardening, and I believe she would have enjoyed Geocaching, so my first hide is placed in her memory and in recognition of Mother's Day. No need to "go bananas" looking for this one, it's pretty simple. :)
Miss you, Mom. Ich liebe dich.
