A sandstone outcrop known as the “Cross Stone” lies by the fence a few metres west of the gate. Although some believe it to be merely an old boundary marker, the name “Cross Stone” suggests it may also have had some religious significance, perhaps the location of a shrine for worshippers, pilgrims or funeral parties journeying to St Mathew’s chapel near Cardross a few miles south of here. On its top surface, the stone has a socket which could have been cut to hold a small wooden or metal cross. Certainly, in terms of “crossing over”, the stone’s location gives it a truly symbolic position and with the stunning views to the north, one can readily imagine funeral parties or tired travellers pausing here to rest and reflect before continuing on their way. Best parking is in Balloch from where it is about 2.5km, however there are a couple of spaces a bit closer, thus reducing the walk to about 1.3km.
Update 1st March 2016
Cache moved further along the fence, hint updated.
