Geocache Description:

The Wannon Falls were the first falls in Victoria to attract artists (including S.T. Gill, Eugene von Guerard, Thomas Clark, Nicholas Chevalier and Louis Buvelot), sightseers, locals – the falls becoming a popular daytrip picnic destination – and travellers passing through the district. It remains a popular tourist destination in the area along with the nearby Nigretta Falls.

Thomas Clark came to this destination and painted his artwork in the late 1800's

The Wannon Falls are waterfalls located in the Southern Grampians Shire, 19 km west of Hamilton, Victoria, Australia. The Falls are fed by the Wannon River that has its head waters in the Grampians Mountains. The Falls are unexpected after driving west across gently undulating lava plains. They plunge over a basalt lava cliff dropping into a large plunge pool 30 metres below. In the winter wet season they can be spectacular (see photo), but at the end of the summer dry they may shrink to a mere trickle. Downstream of the falls there is a narrow steep-walled valley, with cascades around large blocks that have fallen in from the sides. The narrow valley was eroded as the falls retreated upstream as a result of undermining of a soft bed of sediments that underlies the hard basalt. Adjacent to the falls there is a Recreational Reserve with picnic areas and some interpretation signs, and a larger Scenic Reserve that has natural native vegetation and some disturbed areas that have been replanted with natives. With 2 Carparks to chose from you can come direct to the cache and park at the Thomas Clark Viewing Area carpark or park a little further up the in the Wannon Falls main carpark to collect the other nearby caches and take a short walk down to this cache.  The walk itself is not to hard. Remember to be mindful of wildlife, especially in the summer when there may be snakes. As children we used to come here to have our own adventures. climbing the hill, climbing trees and playing in the rocks and dirt.
