Geocache Description:

Sherman Anderson Field. Home of the Mount Vernon Bulldogs Baseball team, and part of the Skagit County Fairgrounds. Be cautious during baseball season. Foul balls have known to fly over the fence. This was part of the 2014 MV Parks Geocoin Challenge. Watch for upcoming events at www.mountvernonwa.gov/geocaching.

1st Lieutenant Sherman E. Anderson was an early resident of Mount Vernon who served in the Army Air Corp as a bombardier in a Mitchell B25. In 1944 during a mission out of North Africa, his plane was hit by flak and he was seriously injured. Their mission was critical, and he refused to let the pilot turn the plane around for medical treatment. They continued on the mission with their formation and had success in eliminating a critical bridge. Anderson received a Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), as well as many other accolades for his heroism. He was a very big deal in Mount Vernon. He passed away at the age of 43 in 1959. He was a big baseball fan, and the field was named in his honor.
