Tamarack Mining co dammed Hills Creek to create Tamarack Lake then almost twice a large as Calumet lake. Lake levels were also maintained from pump water from the mines which were high in acids, causing corrosion to the boilers. A new water source was run from Lake Superior at Tamarack Waterworks. The lake was maintained for many years as a back-up water supply, but was drained and only a large marshy area remains.
