Geocache Description:

Welcome to more of my off-the-beaten path caches, and the second in the Juneau’s hidden history series. Up this time is AJ tunnel and the ruins around it.

If you have been on the east glacier loop trail before you are most likely familiar with AJ Falls. But how many realize this is a man-made waterfall? AJ Falls is a product of the power generation project by treadwell mining company in 1911 whereby they dammed nugget creek, dug a tunnel through the ridge and built a mile long pipe to produce hydro power for mining projects. The project was eventually taken over by the Alaska Juneau Mining company before it was all abandon when the AJ mine closed down in the 1940s due to WWII. The ruins of the pipe, the nugget creek dam, and the power house are easily seen from east glacier loop and the trail of time. This cache takes you to the exit of the tunnel just off the upper part of east glacier loop trail.

To reach this cache simply take the upper part of the east glacier loop trail (use the trail head along the trail of time near the steep creek bridge) until you are just about to go up the long set of stairs. Off the trail to the left will be an unmaintained trail that will take you to the cache and the tunnel. There is a lot to see here including what is left of the wooden water pipe, some machinery, one still standing building, and various knick knacks scattered around. Enjoy.

Notes: cache is not hidden in any of the ruins or pipes, nor is it in the tunnel. So just admire what was once here and how nature is taking it back.
