The Last Train To Nowhere - The Location!
Merchiston Station was a railway station which served the area of Merchiston in Edinburgh, Scotland, for around eighty years. The station was built by the Caledonian Railway between 1879 and 1883 and was constructed between 1879 and 1883 with two platforms and a small overhead footbridge. The station was located approximately 2.25 km west of Princes Street Station, at the bottom of Bonaly Place (since renamed Harrison Place). The station's last passenger service was on 10 September 1962. The part of the track occupying the former station at Merchiston is now a footpath.
The Last Train To Nowhere - The Cache!
Although closed and demolished in 1962, some of the platforms and white picket fencing of the old Merchiston Staion remain under the shrubary. To find this cache you will need to 'step up' onto the old platform to reveal it's hidden location. The cache also contains a photo montage I put together myself giving you a glimpse of the old station mixed with the scene we see today. The photos were taken from the very spot on the platform that the cache is hidden - so make sure you take a moment to just imagine the scenes back then with magnificent old steam engines pulling up to pick up excited passengers from this very platform!
The Last Train To Nowhere - Tickets Please!
We would love for our lucky cache finders to leave old railway tickets with our cache. Tickets from anywhere and everywhere - the further afield the better! Failing that, any old railway themed memoribilia would be a great addition to this cache - past or present! Let's also see who can get the first Edinburgh Trams ticket in this cache!
We are excited to see how this cache develops and any feedback regarding it would be greatly appreciated!
