Early Christian Martyrdom - Παλαιοχριστιανικό Μαρτύριο

The early Christian martyrdom is an area that traditionally has been associated with the early Christians of Mytilene. However the texture of the rock , the difficulty in cutting into it and the size of the portion that is missing indicates that it was removed for other use and not by Christians in order to create a place of worship. It’s possible that the already dug out area was used as a meeting place or temple by the early Christians, as the opening and the position provided ideal coverage for their gatherings.
Since the word " martyrdom " has a double meaning , ‘evidence of admission’ and ‘torture’, has not yet been clarified its actual use, as there is no historical evidence , nor any information about where the cut out pieces of the rock ended up.
It’s worth visiting this place for the view the town. There are a lot of neoclassical architectural “wonders " , mansions of merchants and the nouveau riche of the late 1800s and early 1900s , The era when trading with Asia Minor, Constantinople and the Black Sea was blooming.

Το Παλαιοχριστιανικό μαρτύριο είναι χώρος που κατά παράδοση έχει συνδεθεί με τους πρώτους χριστιανούς της Μυτιλήνης. Ομως η υφή του βράχου, η δυσκολια στην κοπή αλλα και το μέγεθος του τμήματος που λείπει δειχνουν οτι αυτό αφαιρέθηκε για άλλη χρήση και όχι από χριστιανούς για να δημιουργήσουν ένα χωρο λατρείας. Μπορει φυσικά το ηδη ανασκαμένο τμήμα να χρησιμοποιήθηκε σαν ναος ή τοπος συνάντησης, καθως το άνοιγμα και η θέση του προσφέρουν ιδανική κάλυψη γιά συγκεντρώσεις των πιστών εκείνης της εποχής.
Επειδή η λέξη "Μαρτύριο" έχει διπλή έννοια, της μαρτυρίας σαν παραδοχή αλλά και του βασανισμού, δεν εχει αποσαφηνισθεί ακόμη η πραγματική του χρήση, καθως δεν υπάρχουν ιστορικά στοιχεία, ουτε κάποιες πληροφορίες για το που κατέληξαν τα τμήματα που εχουν αποκοπεί.
Ομως αξίζει να επισκεφθείτε το σημειο, για την θέα που προσφέρει του συνόλου της περιοχής. Μια περιοχή γεμάτη απο νεοκλασικά αρχιτεκτονικά "θαύματα", κατοικίες των μεγαλεμπόρων και νεόπλουτων του μεσοπολέμου αλλά και όλου του προηγούμενου αιώνα, την εποχή που το εμπόριο με τα Μικρασιατικά παράλια, την Κωσταντινούπολη και την Μαύρη θάλασσα ήταν σε άνθιση.
Είναι σίγουρο οτι θα μετανοιώσετε, αν δεν πάρετε μαζί σας, την φωτογραφική σας μηχανή !
