Remnants of Clink Bridge along the Dungeness River


There are currently five bridges spanning the Dungeness River: Schoolhouse Bridge near the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse, Woodcock Bridge (also known as the Ward Bridge or Ward Road Bridge), Burlingame Bridge on Old Olympic Highway, Railroad Bridge (has been a footpath since 1992 and is also known as the Howe Truss Bridge) and the Highway 101 Bridge.

At least three more bridges existed in the past across the main Dungeness River as indicated by remnants that are still visible, historical accounts, or photographs: The Canfield Bridge just down river from the current Railroad Bridge, the Duncan Road Bridge one mile downstream from the Fish Hatchery, and the Clink Bridge three miles upstream from the Hatchery.

Some of the early settlers on the south end of the Palo Alto area made their homes along the banks of the Dungeness River. One of these early settlers was a family named Clink who settled further down the river towards Sequim. The Clink Bridge, an early landmark, was named for this family. The Clink family left the area and seemed to have disappeared after a large flood just before the turn of the century.

The first Clink Bridge was just a log across the river with a handrail attached. First real bridge was built at this location in 1911 by Bill Schmith; bridge subsequently washed out and was rebuilt many times. Today, all the remains are the timber abutments.
