Beautiful Borrowdale is a cache we've had out for many years and on a recent maintenance trip we decided to drop another box or two to encourage a few more visitors. Ashstead Fell is a really marvellous viewpoint and although a little steep in places, not too hard an ascent - a 'drive-by' hill!
Rather than follow the small path an alternative route is following the quad bike tracks. This will take you past this great example of curvy geology! Synclines are folded rocks, and the bottom of an upside down arch. The top of the fold, ie the arch, is an anticline. The rocks here are Silurian period mudstones formed in water 440mya. Through massive earth movements of continental crust, producing mountain building episodes, they have been lifted over a thousand feet up, crunched, squished and folded.
More impressive rocks further up!
