Geocache Description:

Fore!

You will not find a container at the above coordinates!

The container is located at:

N57 5A.BCD

E014 0E.FGH

Where A is a driver, B is a mid-mashie, C is a niblick and D is a mashie. E on the other hand is something called a brassie, F is yet another niblick, G is a cleek and H, finally, is a driving iron.

These antiquities were seen on all golf links around Scotland in the 19th century. Today, the names are much more bland and so is maybe the game. When you find the container, you might have a distant view of a golf course that tries to mimic a true Scottish or Irish links. The linksland was the area between the beach and the fields where the soil was good enough to use for growing crops. The grassy linksland could not be used for anything but keeping sheep. The game of golf is thought to have originated from shepherds hitting objects from place to place with their staffs. Hollows where the sheep could find cover for the wind eventually turned into bunkers, a sand trap that is still used on modern golf courses.

Even if you carry binoculars, you will most likely not see any golf clubs with hickory shafts while signing the log. These shafts are since long considered historic. Todays clubs (with boring names as 5-iron) are equipped with shafts made from steel or graphite.

A modern golfer is often allowed to carry a GPS, just as you do when logging this cache. The golfer uses it to find the distance from where his ball is located to pre-defined positions on the current hole, such as front, center and back of the green, bunkers etcetera. A golfers GPS will not be able to show the distance to the flagstick (i.e. the hole) since the holes are moved around from day to day to have an even wear on the greens. Those who want to have an accurate distance to the flagstick will have to use a laser device which is also allowed.
