Geocache Description:

This cache is in the Lithonia's Historic Hike series.

You are looking for a medium sized camouflaged plastic container at the edge of a wooded area bordering Lithonia's historic African American cemetery. Be respectful of your surroundings. Do not practice CITO in the cemetery. Permission was obtained to place this cache.

In 1895, the Bruce Street corridor was settled as an African American community by former slaves, farmers, and quarry workers. Institutions such as churches, schools, and cemeteries were established to serve the community's needs. The earliest known burial in the Bruce Street African American Cemetery (colloquially known as Cemetery One) dates to 1911. Natural granite outcrops can be seen in the cemetery, along with granite headstones made by African American owned funeral homes such as Cox Brothers and Haugabrooks. In 1971, the cemetery was deeded to the Lithonia Civic League. Lucious Sanders, a Civil Rights leader and organizer of DeKalb County's first voter registration drive for African Americans, is known to many as the “Dr. King of Lithonia.” Saunders was largely responsible for getting streetlights, paved roads, municipal services, and the first credit union of African Americans in Lithonia. In addition, Mr. Saunders promoted black history programs and black representation in government. Saunders died in 1993 and is buried in this cemetery.
