Geocache Description:

This cache is in the Lithonia's Historic Hike series.

You are looking for an ammo can in a wooded area behind the ruins of a historic school. Do not trespass into the ruins. To get the password, Google Bruce Street School on the internet. Then click on Lithonia Walking Map-Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. Scroll down to the Lithonia town map. On item 7, the password is the third word in the sentence. Permission was obtained to place this cache.

Constructed in 1938 using privately raised funds, the Bruce Street School served Lithonia’s African American community. Initially an elementary school, a high school curriculum was established in 1943, and the first graduation at the school was held the following year. In the 1950s, a new equalization school was constructed across the street as an attempt by the state to maintain segregated public schools. Shortly after the new school was built, the original Bruce Street School burned down to ruins. Politician Howard Lee attended the Bruce Street equalization school. In 1969, Lee made history as the first African American man elected mayor of a southern city (Chapel Hill, NC). Today, the equalization school building houses the DeKalb County Police Academy.

The Bruce Street School is in ruins after a destructive fire in the 1950s.
