Geocache Description:

This is a fairly large container big enough for Geocoins, travel bugs, and other Scout-related trade items. This should be an easy find for most Geocachers and will also be the launching point for travel bugs created by Scouts earning their Geocaching merit badges during Summer Camp.  Please be sure to log your trackables.

This cache is located on the McKee Scout Reservation and is placed with the permission of the Blue Grass Council.  Access to this cache for non-Scouters is from the designated parking area located off of Pilot Knob Road.  NO VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED PAST THE PARKING AREA.  Please limit your search to daylight hours and do not proceed beyond the cache location without the permission of the Camp Ranger or the Blue Grass Council.

The route to the cache crosses a small creek in which the water level may vary.  Please exercise caution while crossing.

Scouts and Scouters attending an official scouting event at Camp McKee may access this cache from the Pioneer Mountain Trail.

McKee Scout Reservation, a.k.a. "Camp McKee", is the camping property owned by the Blue Grass Council, where its Scouts come to camp and attend Summer Camp.  The Blue Grass Council, which has its Service Center in Lexington, KY consists of six districts -- Elkhorn, Palisades, Lake Cumberland, Shawnee, Lonesome Pine and Mountain Laurel which together serve over 10,000 youth and adults in 55 counties.

Camp McKee's namesake is Mrs. Gertrude P. McKee who began piecing together the land that would become the McKee Scout Reservation on June 1, 1920.  Seven tracts of land totaling more than 300 acres were deeded over to the Blue Grass Council on March 31, 1945 by P. L. and Gertrude McKee for one dollar.  The first official Camporee was held in 1946, with additional camporees held during the years that followed.  Additional parcels of land were added in the late 1950s.  The camp now consists of more than 600 attractive acres.

On June 10, 1960, after years of development and construction of camp facilities, the first of 1300 boys who were to use the camp during its initial summer camping season arrived.  The camp fee was $14.00 with an additional fifty cents added for camper insurance.

Groundbreaking for a new dining hall at Camp McKee occurred on March 31, 2001.  This new dining hall, Stamler Hall, seats approximately 400 diners and sports "state of the art" kitchen facilities.  During July 2003, the new Stamler Dining Hall opened for service and served approximately 360 campers and staff in air conditioned comfort, a first for the McKee Scout Reservation.
