CACHING IN ON THE TOUR DE FRANCE
To celebrate Stage 2 of the Yorkshire Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2014 finishing in Sheffield on Sunday 6 July, here is a selection of caches, mostly “cache and dashes” for which you will need two or four wheels, along the route of the race through High Bradfield, Worrall, Oughtibridge and Grenoside. You can park on the road, almost on top of the cache, but don’t expect to find it on the day of the race as the roads will be closed to traffic all day. Be careful of the drop off the new road surface onto the grass and be sure to park on the lefthandside if you are coming from "The Cyclists are Coming!" as there is a drainage ditch on the other side!
Recent British Successes in “Le Tour”
- In 2009, Mark Cavendish, the Manx Missile, passed Barry Hoban's record for the most Tour de France stage wins by a British rider. Cavendish won the overall points competition (Green Jersey) in 2011 and in 2012 became the most successful sprinter in Tour de France history with his 23rd stage victory.
- In 2012, Bradley Wiggins became the first British cyclist to win Le Tour, an achievement for which the Queen knighted him.
- Chris Froome won in 2013, taking the yellow jersey on three of the twenty one stages.
