Alfred William Howitt (1830-1908)


Some notable times in his life
 
Howitt was born in Nottingham, England

Educated in England, Heidelberg and University College School, London.

An early settler of Lucknow

Howitt was sent in 1859 by a Melbourne syndicate to examine the pastoral potential of the Lake Eyre region

in 1860 Alfred with Angus McMillan prospected the Mitchell and Dargo rivers and from gold in Crooked and Wentworth rivers.

In 1861, the Royal Society of Victoria appointed Howitt leader of the Victorian Relief Expedition, with the task of establishing the fate of the Burke and Wills expedition.

In 1863 Howitt was appointed police magistrate and warden of the goldfields in Gippsland

Married Maria Robinson in 1864.

Alfred was one of the first hop growers in Bairnsdale area and build the first hop kiln in 1872.

Alfred in September 1889 Recommended a school of the mines, the ideal soon popular and a committee was formed.

In 1889 he became acting secretary of mines.

In 1903 Howitt was awarded the Clarke Medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales

Wrote a book called "the native tribes of south-east australia" from time spend studying the local aborigines of the bairnsdale district.

in 1904 he received the first Mueller Medal from the Royal Society of Victoria

He retired in January 1902 on a pension but served on the royal commission which in 1903 examined sites for the seat of government of the Commonwealth,
and was chairman of the royal commission on the Victorian coal industry in 1905-06.

Howitt died in 1908 in Bairnsdale, Victoria.

The recreational park named in his honour is located adjacent to the Mitchell River Bridge on the eastern side of Bairnsdale.

Alfred william Howitt home was called "eastwood" overlooked the mitchell river west of Bairnsdale.

He was a Explorer, Scientist, Geologist, Anthropologist, Botanist
