SLO: KRATKA ZGODOVINA IN DEJAVNOSTI ZAVODA

EN: Founded in 1900 in Ljubljana, initially as a private institution, it has operated as a state institution since 1905. The founder of the Ljubljana School for the Deaf is the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.
AREAS OF WORK
We educate children from the time of diagnosis until they have completed their education and training at our secondary school. Our primary goal is the optimal development of the child’s abilities in all areas, with special emphasis on the development of language (the Slovene language and the Slovenian Sign Language), communication, hearing and speech.
PRE-SCHOOL UNIT
The pre-school unit implements day care and pre-school education according to the national public kindergarten curriculum and the adapted programme for the deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Within a project we also implement a programme for the children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
PRIMARY SCHOOL
The primary school provides the programmes with regular educational standard for deaf and hard-of-hearing children, and for children with speech- and language disorders. Also the children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders are included.
SECONDARY SCHOOL
We are the only secondary school for the deaf, hard-of-hearing and speech- and language-impaired students in Slovenia. In lower and middle vocational education, middle technical and vocational-technical education, the students can choose graphics, wood technology, mechanical engineering, textile technology, and information and media technology programmes.
RESIDENTIAL UNIT
The Ljubljana School for the Deaf also has a residential unit for pupils and students. They are provided with comfortable accomodation in single and twin bedrooms. Living and working in mixed residential groups is an adequate provision replacing home and family during the week days.
HEALTHCARE UNIT
The healthcare unit comprises several (outpatient) dispensaries with specialists: speech and language therapists, hearing training therapists (teachers of the deaf), a clinical psychologist, special educators, an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist doctor for children and adults, psychiatrists for children and adolescents, an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist.
WORKING WITH THE PARENTS
Parents have the most important role in the child’s social, emotional, psychological and language development. A number of support activities are offered to them at the Ljubljana School for the Deaf, such as family counselling, family therapy, school of parenting, meetings of the parents of children in mainstream schools and children who attend the Ljubljana School for the Deaf, a self-help group for the parents and a group of the parents of children with cochlear implants.
SLOVENIAN SIGN LANGUAGE
The Slovenian Sign Language is the language used by the majority of the deaf in Slovenia for mutual communication. It is a fully developed language with its own grammar and sign vocabulary, and it is equal to other languages.
