Marcel Cerdan est un champion de boxe français, né Marcellin Cerdan le 22 juillet 1916 à Sidi Bel Abbès (Algérie) et mort le 28 octobre 1949 dans un accident d'avion survenu au-dessus de l'archipel des Açores (Portugal). Ayant grandi au Maroc à partir de 1922, il était surnommé « le Bombardier marocain ».
Le jeune Marcel effectue son premier combat de boxe à l'âge de huit ans, pour une tablette de chocolat. À dix-huit ans, il dispute son premier combat professionnel à Meknès.
Il débute à Paris à la Salle Wagram contre Louis Jampton. Semant la terreur sur les rings dans les années 1940, il est surnommé « le Bombardier marocain ». Après avoir gagné les titres français et européens des poids welters, il devient champion du monde des poids moyens en battant « Le Roi du KO » Tony Zale le 21 septembre 1948 par KO technique (abandon à la 12e reprise).
C'est à cette époque qu'il est le compagnon de la chanteuse Édith Piaf.
Le 27 octobre 1949, Cerdan prend le vol Paris-New-York Air France afin d'y rejoindre sa compagne Édith Piaf. Il avait prévu d'y aller par mer, mais après une conversation téléphonique avec Édith Piaf, il a spontanément décidé d'y aller en avion dans la nuit du 27 au 28 Octobre. Il y avait pas de billets pour ce vol, mais au de dernière minute un lieu à bord lui a vendu un couple nouvellement marié, qui avait l'intention de passer leur lune de miel aux États-Unis.
L'avion s'écrase dans la nuit du 27 au 28, sur le Pico de Vara, une montagne de l'île São Miguel, dans l'archipel des Açores. Il n'y a aucun survivant parmi les 48 passagers de l'avion où se trouvait aussi la grande violoniste Ginette Neveu. Les cendres de Marcel Cerdan ont été inhumées au Maroc, puis en 1995 au cimetière du Sud de Perpignan.

Marcellin "Marcel" Cerdan was a French pied noir world boxing champion who was considered by many boxing experts and fans to be France's greatest boxer, and beyond to be one of the best to have learned his craft in Africa. His life was marked by his sporting achievements, social lifestyle and ultimately, tragedy.
Having grown up in Morocco in 1922, he was nicknamed "the Moroccan Bombardier."
The young Marcel makes his first boxing at the age of eight years for a chocolate bar. At eighteen, he played his first professional fight in Meknes.
He debuted at the Salle Wagram in Paris against Louis Jampton. Inducing fear in the ring in 1940s, he was nicknamed "the Moroccan Bombardier." After winning the French and European titles welterweight, he became world champion middleweight beating "KO King" Tony Zale September 21, 1948 by TKO (abandonment to 12 recovery).
Although married with three children, he had an affair with the famous singer Édith Piaf. The affair lasted from summer 1948 until his death in autumn 1949. They were very devoted to each other and Piaf wrote one of her most famous songs, Hymne à l'amour, for Cerdan. In 1983, Cerdan and Piaf had their lives turned into a big screen biography by Claude Lelouch. The film, Édith et Marcel , starred Marcel Cerdan, Jr. in the role of his father and Évelyne Bouix as Piaf. He is portrayed by actor Jean-Pierre Martins in the 2007 Piaf biopic La Môme (entitled La Vie en Rose in English-speaking countries).
October 27, 1949 Cerdan takes flight Paris-New York Air France to visit Piaf in New York, where she was singing.
He planned to go there by sea, but after a telephone conversation with Édith Piaf, he spontaneously decided to go there by plane on the night of 27 to 28 October. There were no tickets for this flight, but at the last minute, a place on board sold him a newly married couple, who intended to spend their honeymoon in the USA.
The Lockheed L-749 Constellation crashed into Monte Redondo (São Miguel Island, Azores), killing all 11 crew members and 37 passengers on board, including Cerdan.
